A City On The Move
Let`s be honest, nobody likes driving in the city, its congested, its stressful, and its impossible to find parking. The solution to this problem though is not to make the city more car-friendly, the solution is to provide a better and more viable option. This means improving our public transit and making the city more bike-friendly. Right now cars wreak havoc on our streets, they pollute, they are loud, and they are dangerous. If disgraced ex Governor Cuomo had not used the MTA as a piggy bank for so many years, we might have money to improve our failing subway system. If city officials stood up to minority car owners, we`d have better bus routes, and we would have more bike lanes. Its not that people do not want to bike to work or send their kids to school on their bikes, they want to, but we need safer and protected bike lanes citywide. To quote Field of Dreams "If you build it, they will come".We need to let people know that having a car in the city is a luxury, not a right. We need safer streets for pedestrians, we need safer and protected bike lanes throughout the city, we need better public transit options, we need to make NYC`s Open Streets permanent to benefit restaurants and other small businesses, we need to reclaim parking spaces for bike parking, outdoor dining, and trash receptacles.
My boldest proposals is the creation of the 5th Ave Super Plaza extending from Flatbush to 9th St and the Atlantic Avenue Redesign (AAR) which will have a light rail running from Furman St (Brooklyn Bridge Park) to East New York (Broadway Junction). The AAR will cut Atlantic Avenue down to a one street one each side of the light rail as well as bike lanes on opposite sides of the former avenue. Both will create a safer experience for Brooklynites as well increase foot traffic and business in the area. If you are wondering about how businesses will be able to stay alive and bring in inventory if we shrink the road, then please read my A GREENER CITY policy section and read about the Blue Highways Initiative.
